Berber rugs are among the oldest textile traditions in the world, predating written history. The Berber people — also known as Amazigh — are the indigenous inhabitants of North Africa, and their weaving tradition stretches back at least 2,500 years.

The Language of Symbols

Every motif in a Berber rug has meaning. The diamond shape represents the eye of protection. Zigzag lines symbolize water and life. The comb pattern wards off evil. These symbols were a language passed from mother to daughter, embedded in wool and memory.

Beni Ourain: The Iconic White Rug

The Beni Ourain tribe of the Middle Atlas gave the world one of the most recognizable rugs: an ivory pile with black geometric patterns. Long before they became fashionable in European design circles, these rugs were sleeping mats, wedding gifts, and spiritual objects.
